2 folders. In Joseph Emsley Bettis purchased 106 acres from Duke Bettis. Duke did not have a clear title on the land, as it had not been transferred from previous owner, William Walker. Debts and land continued to transfer to new owners, who made attempts to recover their debts from Emsley, and to be granted a clear title on the Walker land. Within the chain of title are Snyder and Branner. |

Marshall sued to recover possession of tract of land once belonging to Hawn but now belonging to Marshall based on court judgment, execution, levy, and sale upon said deed to Marshall. Hawn refused to surrender possession. Marshall's could not issue action of ejectment due to the justice's judgment being lost. Court dismissed the plaintiff's bill. |

William Brazelton gave deed to tract of land to Samuel N. Fain. A lien was placed on land for payment of $1000 to R. C. Jackson. Plaintiffs charge that deed did not invest William's son James R. Brazelton with title to land. There was a large amount of unpaid taxes due to Jackson. Montgomery claimed mortgage. |

Brothers John and Hiram Moyers sued other brother Silas Moyers over land owned by their father, Joshua Moyers. Joshua gave a deed of gift for the land to Silas. But after Joshua dies, land was sold and purchased by Col. Roper. Dispute continues. Refers to previous case: Thomas Brown v. John Moyers, Hiram Moyers, Alfred Moyers, and Silas Moyers (Box 1126). Silas had been made trustee of land. John and Hiram sue Silas for not conveying equal portion of the land. Includes petition by Alfred Moyers. |

Peck indebted to Gen. Brazelton (who had market in New Market after which town was named; the 2 had history of financial dealings). Secured debt w/deed on 1,000 acres, w/Dick as trustee. On advice of Peck's 2 sons W.R. & Isham T. (visiting from Louisiana), & in effort to settle up, Peck deeded 200+ acres of this land to Brazelton; Peck says intended as mtg. Brazelton took possession of this 200+ acres, leading Peck to file this suit. NOTE: Peck, TN Supreme Court judge from 1822-34, died in 1869. |

Case file contains various tax receipts as well as a George Washington 2c stamp and an 1871 newspaper clipping advertising the court ordered sale of land. |

Tipton had bought tract of land from Hurst in 1859 using notes, including $875 in bank notes which were executed in the Bank of Tennessee. Note was assigned to Walker in 1861. During war, defendants were Confederates and Walker a Unionist. Walker was forced to accept Confederate money as payment for the note. Walker now suing defendants to enforce a lien on the land for the unpaid purchase money, charging that the Confederate money was fraudulent and not a payment at all. |
