Alleged their firm's reputation & good credit damaged by a notice issued by bank charging them with failure to pay their debts. Notice printed on post card that was allegedly displayed to various persons. Bank maintained this type of notification a common practice with no malice intended & that card was not publicly displayed. File in two parts. |

Crawford was married with children and a well-respected citizen of Tunnel Hill, Ga. when the newspaper published a defamatory article about him. It identified Crawford as the man arrested for drunkenness, disorderly conduct, and attempting to break into the homes of Will Calhoun,Essie Long & Addie Stephenson, in Tunnel Hill. He suffered humiliation & embarrassment and believed that he was forever labelled "a sneak and criminal." Major Calhoun, Joe Jeff Moore, W. W. Calloway & Arthur Montgomery testified. |

Ashworth accused paper of publishing a malicious article intended to "blacken his good name." He averred that the article concerning an alienation of affection suit was untrue. Carl F. Muzzey had filed the suit against Ashworth, claiming that Ashworth had an affair w/his wife, Grace E. Muzzey. Ashworth charged that W. I. Wood acted in concert w/the newspaper to destroy his standing & reputation in the town of Bristol, Va. Plaintiff had represented Grace in a Bristol divorce suit. |

Lea sued the Knoxville News Sentinel for libel to his damage $100,000. Lea was a publisher for the Nashville Tennessean and President of Southern Publishers Inc. Lea sued the newspaper for accusing him of robbing the public by using his influence as a corrupt political boss to control acts of public officials for his own financial gain. The defendant was a competitor and W. B. Swaney gave a false and slanderous interview, referring to the plaintiff as guilty of unethical and fraudulent practices that resulted in the failure of certain banks and businesses. The malicious slander was meant to and did hurt his business. Plaintiff sued for libel in the sum of $100,000. |

They claim that Rogers and Nelson published malicious and false materials in the newspaper claiming that Marvin (along with Fred Ballentine, Carl Edward Whitley, Nora Richardson, Freddie Mae Fisher, and Evelyn Crouch) raped a 13 year old girl. The January 11, 1927, edition of the Dyersburg "State Gazette" newspaper is included as evidence. |

The suit was appealed because Parks did not agree with the taxes due on the case. |

Helms originally indicted for criminal libel. On 31 July 1934 he circulated a "printed pamphlet" in which he stated that J. M. Gouge was an ex-thief. According to the allegations Gouge & a Dock Davis were the heads of a gang of thieves who operated in Mitchell Co., NC. Gouge a Justice of the Peace & magistrate. At one time Gouge & Helms ran against one another for the office of magistrate, with Gouge the victor. |

The libel resulted in a warrant being issued for the plntff.'s arrest for the crime of larceny. The plntff. claims that the scandal has ruined his good name & demands $10,000 as recompense. |

Plaintiff was the secretary of the Home Real Estate company and a public figure. R.C. Polk, a reporter for the defendant, supposedly saw the plaintiff's name in a jail book for fraudulently obtaining $200 and gave it to his publisher who put it in the papers with the plaintiff being the only Morrison in town at the time. The paragraph in the paper about the plaintiff were in fact fraudulent and the plaintiff had never been convicted of any crime. Sued for and won $3,500. |
