Thornburg convicted of killing Charles Mendenhall at a utility construction site. Mendenhall picked a fight with Ezra Hood after Hood would not lend him $2. A crowd gathered to watch altercation. Thornburg said he attempted to calm Mendenhall but instead shot him in self-defense. Most of the testimony reveals that words were exchanged between them. It appears that the victim lived on Horn's land and had a relationship with Elise Horn, daughter of Henry and Nannie. The victim had a baby with Elise (5 years before his death) while married to another woman, causing tension between the parties. |

Brief of appellant only. Gilbert was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death of George Belcher. The shooting occurred at a saloon on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line (1899). Gilbert was retried and convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 1901. Floyd claimed self-defense, asserting that Belcher had attacked him. A witness described Belcher as a rowdy, fussy, and dangerous man when he was drinking. Witness stated that Belcher was the "bully" of the entire hollow. No old box no. |
