Plaintiffs claimed that in 1883, they executed several promissory notes to A. J. Pratt, an unfortunate invalid and cripple who wished to start a business to manufacture broom handles. This would enable Pratt to support himself and his ageing father, who was also a cripple. He used the money as collateral to purchase machinery for the [failed] venture. Dyer claimed that Anderson never collected the notes and quit practicing law. Dyer suspected that Anderson was not a legitimate attorney. |

This case concerns much more than notes, several of which were made to Willie Spiller. C. C. Spiller and J. M. Todd sued Jackson and John H. Johnson over notes related to sale of steamboat "Ida." It was a tub, but defendants rebuilt it and named it the "J. H. Johnson." Though the Spillers sold the steamer (and everything aboard) to Jackson and Johnson, they retained title until the notes were paid. Since the defendants made all improvements, the court sided with them. |
