In November of 1861 Parker & Hassell formed a partnership buying and selling sugar and molasses. They later parted ways but failed to legally dissolve the partnership. Parker was indebted to Hassell. They also partnered to buy and sell tobacco. Suit was filed to settle the debt and the partnership.

Additional Plaintiff: W. C. Swoope. Additional Defendants: R. C. McCalla, John Donnelly, and S. R. Sandford. Plaintiffs were partners in Terrell & Swoope, a saw-mill and lumber business. Defendants were partners in J. B. Neely & Co., contractors.

Add. defendant: N. Baxter. Moffitt is the administrator of the estate of George W. Moffitt (dec.). Plaintiff is an attorney who represented the defendant in four different trials against the Nashville, Chattanooga, & St. Louis Railway Company for an undisclosed sum of damages for the negligent killing of his brother, the deceased. The plaintiff was never paid for his services and filed this bill to collected $500 plus interest.

A.P. Green was a tailor and he did business with a firm under the name Massengill & Craighead, the defendant being the principle partner. The defendant received various goods and services from the plaintiff, for which he executed a note for $350. The note was never paid by the defendant and he is now indebted to the plaintiff.

Additional Defendant: J. G. Duke. James Lee owns Lee Gin & Machine Co. Plaintiff charges that he purchased a boring mill from them for $2850 & later claimed that it had a crack in the bottom or bed. Has since refused to make payments, claiming the mill is no longer worth the initial price. Also "made reclamation on your orator for an abatement of the amount of the purchase price."

Case involves debt due for services rendered as Superintendent of Nashville Female Academy; plaintiff defended the school when Nashville was occupied by the military and was taken prisoner in the North in 1862, upon his return in 1865 he sought to re-establish the Academy. The plaintiff sued by his next friend, S.C. Ward. The case involved the purchase of a Chevrolet automobile.

Add. defendants: C. H. Hune & Dan F. Elliotte. Defendants are indebted to the plaintiff in the sum of $243.35 plus interest. The defendants were partners in the business name Memphis Floral Company and they employed the plaintiff as their bookkeeper. He was to receive $50 per month for his services plus an extra $10 for every Christmas and Easter holiday, but was never paid.

Additional Defendants: Thomas Herndon and T. P. Major of the firm Herndon & Major. The plaintiff bank sued for recovery of a debt of $4500 from the defendants on a note the plaintiff bank held.

C. S. and G. T. Britton owe money to Mrs. W. B. Shaffer due to a note they took out. The defendants are ordered to pay Shaffer the $548 she is owed.

The original bill was filed by the bank to collect the balance of a $500.00 note

Henry Carroll owned a business selling paints, oils, glass, and other building materials. He charged the defendants with non-payment for goods used to build Trinity Baptist Church and the parsonage on the same property. Other defendants: L. T. Anderson, R. L. Childress, R. F. Hodges & Trustees, J. S. Wells, and Trinity Baptist Church.

James, John & J. F. sued J. D. for $675 due for labor completed in 1870. Additionally, J. D. had borrowed money from the plaintiffs.

Additional defendants: Sallie A. Thomas (wife of William A. Thomas), John A. and Carrie A. Graham, R. W. Andrews and W. H. Brown. Thomas's residents of KY. Other defendants residents of Madison Co., TN. Case mentions property in Gibson Co. known as the "Gibson Wells".

Add. defendant: Meridith Hill. J.W. Hill holds two notes from the defendant made out to M. Hill totaling $200. A vendor's lieu was made for a tract of land, as well.

Keeler sold land to Baker who agreed to pay for the land in installments as well as help take care of Keeler who was growing old. Keeler claims Baker failed to make payments. Keeler also claims that Baker was cruel to him, laughing when he was in pain and lying to him. The case file mentions that Keeler may be senile as well as an alcoholic. Case file also notes that land doubled in value during the time of the arrangement.

In 1843 land belongong to Thomas Patton, then deceased, was sold to an ancestor of Stephens. Martin the obtained a decree in chancery court against Patton's estate, for $370 which was declared a lien on the land that had been purchased by Martin. The property ownership & settement of the debts were sought during this suit.
