Scruggs was clerk for Smith at Mansion House hotel in Knoxville for 4-5 months in mid 1850s & filed suit for wages for services he rendered as clerk. Justice of peace ruled in Scruggs' favor awarding $172.30 for his services. On appeal to Circuit Court, that amount reduced by $125 note Scruggs owed on horse he purchased from R. Thornburgh, who sold the note to Smith for a $70-80 gold watch plus $20 cash. Witnesses included clerks at other local hotels: Lamar House, Bell House. |
