The plaintiff W.C. Rutland is sued the railroad for the loss of a shipment of cotton meant to be shipped from Memphis, TN to Horn Lake, MS in 1862. The defendant alleges that the cotton was lost due to the Union's capture of Memphis. The defendant alleges that the actions of both the Confederate and Union military forces, for example, burning of cotton bales resulted in the loss of the plaintiff's cotton. The case mentions the fall of Memphis and the Confederate evacuation. |
