This case evolved from a previous case where the pla. had a warrant issue against the def. for embezzling money and attempting to defraud the Avondale Farms Creamery. Defendant was a delivery truck driver and a review of his delivery book allegedly found several changed entries. The def. filed a cross bill seeking damages for humiliation and damage to his reputation. Exhibit materials include delivery and accounting records. |

Suit brought by Arther J. Owens and brothers, against their sister Nena Owens Parker. Parker and her husband are accused of fraudulently obtaining a deed to land owned by the Owens' mother, Mrs. Annie Owens, then attempting to sell two tracts of the land. Annie Owens did not own the property free and clear, and was in debt to the Holston Union National Bank. According to Owens' solicitor, multiple errors were made in the filing of the dispute. |

Polk Co. & R. E. McClary successfully challenged the constitutionality of the state's new abolition of the poll tax. In 1943, the General Assembly passed a bill outlawing the poll tax. For years, the tax had been a way of legally suppressing voting privileges of poor whites and African Americans. Under the constitutional provision for a poll tax, counties required proof that male citizens had paid the tax. (The name Biggs is not obvious in the brief & argument.) |
