John L. Case alleged that Moses Howell owed him money on three notes related to a land transaction in Cocke Co. Moses Howell filed a cross bill stating that the notes provided by Case are not accurate.

Additional Defendants: Alexander McGhee, Matthew W. McGhee, William S. Blair, William Upton. This case involved land sold by a Cherokee named Cabin Smith that he received out of the Treaty of 1819 and conveyed to Gideon Morgan who conveyed to John Lowry Lowry claims to have rented land called Blair's Ferry to Blair and McGhee who signed a note. This action was instituted to collect on the note.

Plaintiff was the admr. Of H. Love dec. estate. He sold the land belonging to the estate. Defendant was the clerk at the time but denied having the money. Plaintiff threatened to file suit and defendant acknowledge receiving the money and executed a promissory note. Plaintiff brings this suit to collect the debt from the promissory note.

Plaintiff sued the defendant on a note for $2300 payable on or before January 1 1874 to Thomas Lightfoot and by him endorsed to plantiff.

Additional Defendants: C. E. Robinson, J. H. Overall, W. H. Seller, and L. B. Avant. Plaintiff Tubb sued for repayment on a note that W. H. Sellers and C. E. Robinson executed as principals.

Mrs. Brown sought to borrow $300 from Florence Watson who agreed to the loan--if Brown would pay $15 a month interest for twelve months. Things went downhill from there. When the Browns did not pay the entire sum by year's end, Watson demanded a $400 note at 10 per cent interest per month. Other plaintiffs: Albert Brown, W. T. Wilson, and Mrs. W. T. Wilson. The Browns and Wilsons charged usury.

Co-defendants: Edward D. Tisdale, Sterling W. Tisdale, Daniel Tisdale, Enoch Norton & wife Deborah formerly Deborah Tisdale, Barney Tisdale James Tisdale & Mary Gilmore from Boston, Mary lived in Lexington, KY.

An action of debt by a promissary note brought by the plaintiff against the defendant. The plaintiff was the widow of V. C. Rushing.

Explanation of Cause of Action: Dispute on the legitimacy of title to said promissory note, said to have been delivered back to Plaintiff endorsed by a Mrs. M.W. Overton (executrix of the surviving partner of the firm).

O. C. King was a Morristown attorney who represented Grigsby in a circuit court appeal (Grigsby v. Tomlinson and Harrell). Grisgby was in an "embarrassing financial condition" and could not pay the King's note. King sued. N.B. In 2014, the Library & Archives obtained the Oliver Caswell King and Katherine Rebecca King Papers. They would be of interest to Civil War historians and researchers seeking original records on courtship behavior and Southern customs.

R.N. Richardson was administrator of W.F.D. Graffenried estate. W.F. D. Graffenried and McLemon were co-signers of a $1000 note made on Nov. 30, 1870 payable on Dec. 25, 1871. The promissory note was given for a 5 year lease of a plantation. Richardson claimed that Graffenried was released from the note by the purchaser of the plantation, W.M Daniel. McLemon claimed that he too was released when Daniel released Graffenried.
