Grand jury charged Keller, 4 other defs - Archibald Howland, Wm Dukes, Franklin Wyatt, John Keller -with assaulting Benjamin Wampler (nearly 70 yrs old), breaking into his house armed w/guns, stealing personal property. Wampler: Emerson Keller also there. Wampler was Union man; Def. were rebels. George Keller found guilty, sentenced to 5 yrs prison. Witness Mariah Keller (George's mom): George was 18 miles away boarding w/Wm Moore when crime committed. Court granted new trial; convicted again. |

Grand jury indicted Johnson, Purkepile, 7 others (Wm Corbitt, Henry Dennison, Samuel Shelton, Lacy Satterfield, Samuel Easterly, P. H. Thornburg, Newton Lane) for shooting at Milton Hale & stealing $450 & other personal property from him. Group indicted appear to be military company. Hale's testimony recounts Civil War battle (Bulls Gap) that occurred on the day in question (Nov 11, 1864), 7 miles from his house. |
