Defs say Buck Henry met up w/them & he already had truck (which they didn't know was stolen), took them to Ridgeway Gardens (operated by Epps, well-known bootlegger), where Epps procured them to hijack whiskey from Red Garner, another bootlegger, but they abandoned task. |

It appears that both plaintiffs lived in a rooming home known as the Biddle Flats which sits across the street from the Brown Pressing club, described as, "a considerable social resort for young colored people." Hickman is accuse of fabricating his story and being intoxicated at the time of the incident. |

There are two separate cases in this case file. Warren is the pla. in error in both. This first trial, which began in March of 1933, is for the assault and robbery of Albert Smelcer. The second trial, which began in September of 1933, is for the murder of Barney Earl. Said murder occurred in May of 1933 in the Knox County Jail where both men were prisoners. It is alleged that after Earl was arrested for public intoxication, he was beaten and ultimately killed by Warren for being loud. 2 folders |
