The dfnts. were accused of the first-degree shooting murder of Roscoe Wilmeuth on Dec. 20, 1931. Maze is spelled variously as Mays. Wilmeuth had warrants issued for Jess Martin and Denver Holcomb. Wilmeuth was looking for someone to serve Martin the paper at the time of the shooting. As he was dying, Roscoe identified Maze Martin as the shooter. |

Indicted for Murder in the 1st, the jury returned a conviction of Involuntary Manslaughter. Martin was accused of killing "Artie or A. H. Gilchrist". Martin was a struggling farmer, and became indebted to Gilchrist, owner and operator of a cotton gin. Gilchrist agreed to settle the debt by a sale of Martin's 18 acres of land. Martin confronted Gilchrist about the picking of a crop, and during the argument shot him. In 2 folders. |
