View Entry 1842 John S. O'Neal v. Luke Lea, Entry Taker Bradley Land and Title Dispute

Dispute over land in Southeast quarter of Section 28 in 2nd Fractional Township North, Range 2, in Ocoee District. O'Neal, assignee of David Cunningham, occupant holder of land at issue, possessed the land & had erected a grist mill thereon. Based on such occupancy, O'Neal applied to Lea to have land valued as a mill quarter & for entry on said land, but was refused on both counts, in violation of the recently passed law permitting same & for unlawful purpose of extorting higher price from O'Neal.

View Entry 1842 John M. Bruce v. Samuel Williams Hamilton Land and Title Dispute

Dispute over land in Ocoee District. Bruce had large farm, portion of which he had cleared as field. After land surveyed, survey line determined to run through that field, leaving Bruce's house in different quarter, & it's this quarter that is in dispute. Others mentioned: James Eaton, Lewis Ellis, Evins, James Nicholson, Scruggs, S. Finley. Jury ruled in favor of Williams. Land at issue: Southwest Quarter of Section 4, Fractional Township 6, Range 3, evidenced by Cert. of Entry No. 343.

View Entry 1842 Leroy T. Davis v. Rebecca Broomfield Bradley Land and Title Dispute

Plaintiff claimed to have purchased a tract of land from William B. Broomfield. Defendant claimed same tract of land was owned by her deceased husband, Meedy Broomfield, who had acquired it from William B. Broomfield.

View Entry 1842 Richard Rothwell v. Marshall W. Cunningham, et al. McMinn Land and Title Dispute

Defendants: James Gettys & Humphrey Reynolds. Plaintiff executed a deed of trust to Cunningham before leaving for Virginia. In his absence the defendants worked together to fraudulently sell, redeem & purchase his land. Plaintiff asks court for injunction as defts. have filed an action of ejectment against him & he has not been allowed to redeem his land. Case may be related to Richard Rothwell v. James Gettys, et al, ET Box 81. Additional Defts.: Robinson & Able.

View Entry 1842 William Deery v. John Baker Washington Land and Title Dispute

Adam Waterford, a free black slaveholder, filed suit against Baker two years earlier to prevent being ejected from his land. Waterford was indebted to Baker, & used his land to secure his debt. He also sold a slave called Walter Waterford, thought to be Adam's brother, to Baker for security. Waterford was also indebted to Deery. The suit was filed to clarify the ownership of Waterford's land, as it pertained to Waterford's debt to each party.

James Berry, acting for Shoemaker, made an entry of Hamilton County land with Luke Lea, Ocoee District entry taker, & did so in Smith's name, but Shoemaker paid for the land & intent was that the land be conveyed to Shoemaker, but Smith has not done so. Court district also included Polk County.
