Ashbury Bradford was charged with assault with intent to commit manslaughter. He assaulted the body of Thomas Howell with a knife. The men were fighting over one of them having their arm around a woman.

McMurray convicted of assault on Virginia Hornbuckle (from Cherokee, NC) w/intent to commit rape. Two others (Bob White & Horner) jointly indicted w/him but not tried w/him.

Defendant cut and bit off the ear of John Tarwater. Court quashed the indictment and defendant let go. Cause of action: mayhem.

View Entry 1853 State v. Isom or Isham, a Slave Jefferson Assault with Intent to Commit Rape

Isom ("Negro man, slave for life") accused of assaulting Mary W. Riggs, "widow (of full age) … a white free female" w/intent to rape. Isom was property of 1 or more Gillespies: Alfred, Eliza M. Gillespie (widow & admr. of George F. Gillespie, dec.), Henry (George's son), Elizabeth (m. William R. Casuelo) & Mary (m. M.J.K. Bowen) (George's daughters). Jury: Isom guilty, sentenced to death by hanging. Isom: confession obtained by threats; coat Griggs used to identify him not worn that day; counsel was ill.
