Robert Heiskell was an African American man who initially sued over a dispute at the Staub Theatre. Heiskell purchased a reserve seat at a higher rate and claimed he was owed a seat in the "colored" reserved section. He was ejected but contested his treatment. The show was called "The Devil's Auction" and was very popular. The left side of the balcony was designated "black" and the right was designated "white" with the middle designated as what ever "the majority" was for a particular show. |

Armstrong asserted he was wrongly arrested and jailed, the result of a malicious and fraudulent warrant issued by the police of Knoxville, agents of the defendants. He sought $10,000 in damages after being held without charge in "the Caboose", a certain pen in the prison at Knoxville, for 24 hours. |

Ca. 10 June 1889 plntffs. purchased a lot in West Knoxville situated between 2 ungraded roads that had never been laid out as streets. Later they had the lot surveyed by the Co. Surveyor & erected a fence to avoid encroaching upon the adjacent roads. Def. ordered the fence torn down, alleging that it was encroaching upon its streets & that the entire lot was part of the street. Plntffs. asked court to enjoin the city from trespassing upon or interfering with the lot. See ET 1066. Maps in M-17-19. |

Hardins (rebels) accused of beating up Dunns (Union men). Amos & 2 rebel soldiers (James Grant & Bob Sugarts) heard threatening to whip/hang boys in settlement who didn't join rebel army. Testimony notes "the Dunns" were whipped; unclear if that means… ...Plaintiff & his dad or Plaintiff & his son. Amos heard boasting "how the Lincolnite" howled. Both Def.. died during lawsuit & succession of admrs. appointed for each. Events occurred during 1st yr. of war, before the Conscript. |

Hackney received a promise from the railroad company that a certain number of cars would be ready at Knoxville to transport beef cattle. He accused the company of failing to provide that transportation. Damron & George Arnold were accused of trespassing on Roach's property, destroying his property by removing his fence, destroying his crops, and stealing of 20 wagon loads of rock. The portion of missing fence allowed Roach's livestock to escape, causing him to search for them. Roach sued for damages for time and property lost. |

Bearden, steam boat Captain of the Pennsylvania Steam Boat, agreed to haul a shipment of goods from New Orleans to Knoxville for Hanna & Poindexter. The steamboat sank during the trip. Hanna & Poindexter sued holding Bearden liable for the damage to their ship and the cargo, suing for trespass and damages of $15,000. |

Plaintiff Varner claimed rightful title to a tract of land in the 3rd civil district of Knox County, in which the defendant had entered and removed valuable timber. Varner requested the court issue him a writ to retake possession, verify his title, prevent further trespass, and award him damages for timber lost. |

Newman and Lanning entered a written agreement in which it was agreed Newman would prosecute the Revolutionary War pension claim for one Martha Miller for her husabnd Henry Miller's service. It was agreed Lanning would received one third of said pension. The case was brought because Lanning states he has not received the one third of the pension he was promised. |

Fox was in the employ of the defendants when they allegedly loosened a timber on the building that Fox was on. He was injured, crippled, lamed, and maimed, and lost the use of his limbs so that he could no longer support himself. Also named as a defendant was Edward Sanford.
