Tangled case. William M. Sawyers and Edwin Henry formed a lumber business in 1865 and bought and operated a steam engine and saw mill-grist mill. In 1866, Sawyers secured a deed of trust via William B. Cochran whereby he conveyed all interest in the mill to Cochran. Sawyers accused of fraud in sale to Edwin Henry. Ethan A. Sawyers joined the fray. Jabez Smith, a "half idiot," was cheated. File contains letter from U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Morrison R. Waite. Oliver Caswell King was an attorney. |
