William M. Jeffries died during the Civil War, leaving his widow, & his daughter Ruth M. McTeer. The widow then married Joseph Miller, & Miller was legally bonded as Ruth's guardian. Ruth rec'd pension from her father's death; Miller handled her money. Ruth married A. J. L. McTeer, however, the court failed to make Miller renew his bond. Miller squandered her money, was ordered to turn repay her, however he was insolvent. |

Andrew and Mary Mitchell sued the judges of Hawkins County with failing to carry out their fiduciary responsibilities. Mitchell was bequeathed money, of which the court was assigned the disbursement. Mary Mitchell was a minor when the bequest was made, and as an adult she and her husband sued. |

Stated charge is "covenant broken to [plaintiffs'] damage." "Harbert" is sometimes spelled "Herbert"; "Elias" is sometimes "Ellis." Plaintiffs' statement is signed by John Catron, later a member of the U.S. Supreme Court during the Dred Scott decision. |

Original bill was a complaint about the collection of a trust fund by P. V. Hunter in his capacity of agent of the plaintiff, for which it made a bond by depositing with the company $2 per week out of the collected commissions. Hunter also sued insurer for $50,000, alleging that upon retirement the company had tried to libel him with these charges. Exhibit materials are checks and ledgers. Fizer offered Jackson partnership in a livery company. At the time of the stock trade, Jackson, who had a tidy inheritance, was allegedly so drunk as to be incapacitated. Some stated that he was mentally unbalanced at the time of the deal. It was suspected that in making the trade, Fizer took advantage of Jackson's state and cheated him. Crabb agreed to sell land for no less than $1200, giving Anderson half of the profits. Crabb then sold the land to Hezikiah Faris for $1280 and gave Anderson nothing. Anderson sued to recover the proceeds of the sale. |

Ruohs purchased 22 bonds of $1k each issued by the town of Athens, in order to by shares of $22k in stock in the Nashville & Tellico Railroad Company, meant to mature in 20 years. Ruohs accuses bank officers John A. Hart, William H. Hart, and W. E.Baskett of selling bonds which they knew to be faulty, insolvent, and possibly invalid. See additional case of Joseph Ruohs v. In 1910 James Snodgrass purchased 1300 shares of stock in the Chronicle Publishing Co. from Charles E. Keyes, for a total of $1300, $400 paid at the time of suit. Fannie, Charles' wife signed the contract as security. The contract was ified, Snodgrass returning his stock, but Keyes never returned notes or payment. The suit sought to end the contract & resolve the situation simply & legally. |

Pennington sued for $10,000 for Breach of Promise to Marry and Seduction. Pennington and Ferguson were participating in an affair, and were actually caught in the act by the defendant's wife in Dyersburg. Ferguson fathered at least one of Pennington's children from this affair. He repeatedly promised to divorce his wife to marry Pennington. Breach of Promise to Marry and Seduction were treated as separate charges. See WT1744 for child support suit. |

In 1920, one J. H. Richardson wanted to procure a residence in said county and consummated a trade between the parties by which Robinson would get the Melton residence and then Richardson could rent it. It was then agreed that Robinson would swap Melton a business property for Melton's residence property and Robinson would pay Melton $250 for the difference. Before signing the deed, Robinson tried to get all three of Melton's properties, when only one was agreed upon. Melton refuses to pay back the $250. |
