Francis Rankin's husband Jack was employed by the co. as a guard. He guarded convicts who worked in the coal mines. On June 22, 1891, the convicts rebelled against the guards & murder some of them including her husband. She sued for damages & negligence. She stated that the company was negligent in storing weapons where the convicts could reach them which allowed them to overpower and kill the guards. |

Minor child Virgil Howard Cantrell, 12, was riding in a school bus operated by H. E. Hudson when Hudson stopped, causing the boy to be thrown out the open emergency door. Virgil was said to have suffered great physical pain and anguish; he died a few hours later. Photographs of the bus and road were introduced as evidence. Smith et al. charging Railroad Co. with knocking down and killing John Smith. Train was running at an unusual time of the night with no head light & did not blow a whistle or ring a bell as required by law. |

In original case, H. L. W. Rawlston, the plaintiff, sued the railway company for damages of $20,000 for the wrongful death of John Harris, an employee. Plaintiff claimed the railway company "wrongfully, negligently and carelessly permitted the stock in one of its smelting furnaces to fall, causing the flames to rush out" causing burns that led to John Harris's death. Harris had no will. The furnace was located in South Pittsburg, TN. $1,500 was awarded. The railway appealed. |
