Charge: Curtis Roach, Bob Denny & Lula Denny abducted Dorothy Arnold for the purpose of prostitution & concubine. Roach was accused of having sexual relations with Dorothy for over a year before she was allegedly kidnapped. She said Curtis had promised to marry her. Some testimony regards the boys at the CCC camp. Hawkins, alias Evans, a laborer, and Eliza Holt, a spinster, "being evil and slanderous disposed persons and contriving and intending the public morals to corrupt" were sentenced to 12 months for "unlawfully, openly, notoriously and lewdly…. [on November 10, 1876] bed together as man and wife without being legally married." They were further accused of openly and publicly having carnal knowledge; they were evil examples corrupting the public morals. |

Cause of Action: Treason. The plaintiff in error is accused by the state of Treason during the Civil War. During the war, the plaintiff fought as a Lieutenant in the Confederate Army. The case seems to rest on the question of whether or not the plaintiff was attempting to subvert the authority of the State of Tennessee or the United States. If it was the country and not the state, the state would not have jurisdiction to try the case. |

Mr. Givens hired his nephew, Dawn or "Wessie," to kill his wife. Givens had been involved with Sarah Jane Worsham, & asked Dawn to kill his wife so Givens might pursue Worsham. Dawn shot Martha J. Givens with a shotgun through the front window of their home while she worked at her sewing machine just after night fall. Mr. Givens was concurrently tried for murder. |

Ray, a 42-year-old negro, had never been in any trouble and had been employed by prosecutor Horace Fielden some years before. Fielden owned the general country store that was broken into. The intruder fired 3 shots at Fielden, who returned fire. Intruder fled in an automobile. About $75 worth of goods was taken. Sheriff Frank Quarles took Ray's finger prints & gave them to Ben Davis, a "correspondence school detective." Testimony: Luther, Ruth, Ruby & Anna Lee Ray; John Callaway. |

Sarten charged with taking tobacco stored in old house in field Thomas Cross had rented from a man named Moore, which house was 1/4 mile from Cross' residence & 2 miles from house of Henry Woods, where Sarten & his brother Eli lived. Sarten said to have "a little son." Much testimony re: the tobacco & its comparison to tobacco found near Woods' house. Elizabeth Woods (Henry's daughter) testified. Some testimony Cross regretted prosecuting Sarten & was "put up to it." Also named: free negro named Caffee. |

Gillespie (widow & admr. of George F. Gillespie, dec.), Henry (George's son), Elizabeth (m. William R. Casuelo) & Mary (m. M.J.K. Bowen) (George's daughters). Jury: Isom guilty, sentenced to death by hanging. Isom: confession obtained by threats; coat Griggs used to identify him not worn that day; counsel was ill. |

Ellis accused of stealing 200 fence rails from John Hunt, who said he noticed rails missing from his fence & saw rails he thought to be his on Ellis' fence, as they were marked the same way his rails were marked. Hunt & Ellis not on friendly terms, as (before rails taken) Ellis & wife Fanny sued Hunt for ejectment for land on which fence built, which fence Ellis claims is on his wife's land. Court directed verdict of not guilty. |
