G.L. Ward & Vick, editor of newspaper at Liberty, came to Rock Island railroad station proposing to sell "sickle grinders" (aka mowing machine knife grinders) allegedly patented & designed to sharpen mowing blades. Hash agreed to buy grinders & exclusive right to sell them in Warren & White Counties & gave note to pay for same. Ward never delivered sickle grinders to Hash, but sold note to Cunningham (who had store in Rock Island w/grandson W.A. Moore), who sued to collect it.

View Entry 1875 Hugh J. Brady v. J. M. White Warren Debt Dispute

Brady executed a note for $384 payable to Lawrence McCown. The note was endorsed by McCown and J W White to the First National Bank. White, the last endorser paid and took up the note and then sued Brady in his own name without striking out his name as endorser or filling up the blank endorsement. Suit was filed to finally, lawfully, settle the debt.

Lucy Harris was administrator for estate of Benjamin Harris. Her affidavit was taken in Williamson County. Depositions were taken from Thomas Draper, Ossa Pankey and John Kirby who resided in Smith County. There was a debt related to a horse in Pittsylvania County, VA and Alexander Brown said it was fraudulent. Daniel Sullivan one of the defendants lived in Lynchburg, VA and was not a citizen of Tennessee.

The suit against Elizabeth Settle's estate sought $1000, plus interest, for goods and merchandise received from Seth B. Settle, Elizabeth's son. Seth sued his sister who was admr. of the estate, in order to recover debts owed him by their mother. Her will instructed that her debts to Seth be fulfilled before bequests were made, but the sister did not do so. See additional documentation in Box MT 8 and MT 1151.
