Harrison was security on note signed by both his brother Thomas Self & Thomas' brother-in-law Jacob Harmon, payable to Lemuel Crosby. Judgment obtained on note & dispute arose as to whether Harrison became stayor of that judgment. Jury ruled in Harmon's favor. View Entry 1860 Henry A. Farnsworth, admr of John Graham, dec v. Benjamin Fowler & F. B. Guinn Greene Debt Dispute

Farnsworth sued Fowler & Guinn to collect on $65.70 judgment & $32.17 judgment Graham recovered against them in 1840 before he died. Court ruled in Farnsworth's favor, but Fowler (who didn’t attend trial) asked for relief, claiming he was recovering from having been run over by a wagon. He argued judgments were too old, he doesn't remember them, & if they existed he would've paid them.

View Entry 1843 James McNew & wife Rebecca v. Henrey Tobey Greene Land and Title Dispute

Rebecca McNew was formerly Rebecca Pack. In 1838, Rebecca Pack bought a tract of land from Tobey, with $20 payment. At the time of sale, defendant led plaintiff to believe tract contained 20-30 acres (at $1.50/acre). Plaintiff stated she paid $11 later. Defendant refused to give title, and had informed Rebecca that she had to surrender the land.

Caldwell accused Rogers of unlawfully entering and detaining a tract of land to which she claimed legal right of possession. The circuit court granted her the legal right to possession.

Dyke executed bill single promising to pay Scott $1250 but failed to do so. Dyke says Scott owed him money for horses, mules, merchandise & for work done for him hauling flour to Knoxville & bacon to Greenville, SC. Bill came into Johnson's hands; dispute whether he held it on Scott's behalf or his own. Dyke returned from the South in Jan 1857. Witnesses: James Butler (Dyke's waggoner); Wm Bolinger (lived with Scott, Summer 1856); Abram Johnson (Thomas' son). Court ruled in Dyke's favor.

View Entry 1932 R. L. Ward v. Merchants Mutual Fire Insurance Co. Greene Insurance Disputes

Pla. is a merchant located in Greene County. His store and merchandise, which were insured by the Def., were destroyed in a fire. The Def. charges that the Pla. willfully burned the store himself and refused to honor the insurance policy. Plaintiff is noted to live 17 miles from Greeneville and 4 miles from Romeo on Gap Creek Road, or Horton Highway. The Plaintiff's building was the only one in the community, which was comprised mostly of farmers.

Sarah was the adopted daughter of Eliza and Lewis Anderson. After Lewis' passing, Sarah was still a minor, but sought her inheritance as a dower for her impending marriage.

Trustees: John M. Kilgore, David Alexander, & John Jones. Add. Pltf: John Maloney. Dispute re boundary of 2-acre tract on which schoolhouse stands, schoolhouse having been erected per agreement by Hannah Wright to convey land (& to get minor son James to so convey when he reached majority). Dispute arose when Dr. Alexander Williams (now dec.) claimed part of 2-acre tract was his. Both Wrights & Dr. Williams claim title through original land grants to James Patterson. View Entry 1868 T. A. Arnold, et al. v. David McCorkle, et al. Greene Land and Title Dispute

Others involved: W. K. Vance and _. B. Westmoreland. Bill filed by the heirs of T. D. Arnold. Arnold, as auditor of Vance, filed an attachment bill against him and had the attachment levied. This was in May 1865. In 1868, the land was decreed to be sold. Westmoreland claimed to have commenced an action on the original attachment 10 days before Arnold.

Motion to correct taxation of cash. Plaintiff claims he was compelled to buy a certain tract of land for around $300 in order to save his debt, but by bidding the land he became liable to pay costs that were illegally and erroneously taxed.

View Entry 1854 Woodson F. Brown& wife, Ann Brown, admr. of David Reynolds, dec. v. Joseph Reynolds Greene Estate Dispute/ Settlement

Ann Reynolds claimed that Joseph Reynolds unlawfully obtained $600 from the estate. He claimed that David Reynolds owed him the amount in notes. However, Joseph was unable to produce the notes by which the debt originated. Suit sought to settle the estate by determining whether the debt was lawful, or whether Joseph owed the estate the $600.
