Phipps & Kroft dissolved their business partnership in Dec. 1860. Kroft agreed to take over assets & debts of business from Phipps. Kroft did not pay all of firm's debts & judgments had been issued against Phipps to settle those debts. Phipps claimed to be no longer responsible for them. |

Dispute re use of Confederate notes to pay debt at time when "no man was safe in saying or doing anything that would be deemed unfriendly or disloyal to the Confederate states." |
