Mann & Co. sued Lowe and Gillispie for debt due by note. Court ruled in favor of plaintiffs for their damage $237.96. Defendants move for new trial, which is refused, and then appealed.

View Entry 1871 Thomas Phipps v. Roswell H. Kroft, et al. Hamilton Debt Dispute

Other defendants: Stephen Hyatt; R. W. House; Leander W. Townsend; Azariah Carpenter; Dardin Smith; E. B. Stoddard; Caleb Framburger; S. Crane. Phipps & Kroft dissolved their business partnership in Dec. 1860. Kroft agreed to take over assets & debts of business from Phipps. Kroft did not pay all of firm's debts & judgments had been issued against Phipps to settle those debts. Phipps claimed to be no longer responsible for them.

View Entry 1856 The President, Directors & Company of the Union Bank of Tennessee v. James R. Brown & Richard J. Moore Hamilton Debt Dispute

Def Brown executed a $1,000 bill of exchange payable to Sampson D. Bridgman, who endorsed it to Def Moore, who endorsed it to Pla.. When bill became payable, it was not paid; hence, this lawsuit. Jury ruled in favor of Pla. against Def Brown (maker) but in favor of Def Moore (endorser).

View Entry 1871 William A. Moore & Edward W. Marsh dba Moore & Marsh v. David N. Bell Hamilton Debt Dispute

Bell sued Moore & Marsh in Chancery over debt firm owed Bell, attaching firm's property (land w/store house at 4th & Market Sts, Chattanooga) to satisfy debt; property sold to James R. Hood. Moore & Marsh now sued Bell in Circuit Court over same matter. Dispute re use of Confederate notes to pay debt at time when "no man was safe in saying or doing anything that would be deemed unfriendly or disloyal to the Confederate states."
