The dispute seems to be over a deed. George W L Marr presumably Sr. died leaving a plot of land and his heirs sued Sampson who alleged that he owned the land through a tax title. said Sampson lost the circuit court case partially because he did not poses the original copy of the deed. Sampson alleged that the land was passed out of the hands of George W L Marr in the fiscal year 1848. |

The brief consists mainly of letters between the defendant to the plaintiff with the defendant updating him on the status of paying his debt. The defendant seems to have trouble. At one point he mentions how during the war he lost everything except his land and that the planting of cotton is not as good as it used to be. The two parties appear to be cousins. |

In 1868, George S. Kington went to Wright requesting him to be his security in his prosecution against Susan Scott and John Chate for forcible entry and detainer. Wright later found out that Kington had withdrawn from said suit. Judgment was rendered against John Porterfield and Wright as security for $106.50. Wright charged he never signed a bond as security for Porterfield but for Kington. Wright wanted supersedeas against Scott to be restrained from enforcing execution and judgment quashed. |

Parrott set it up where Bruce was the 'aren't to hire out his slaves, take care of them with clothes, medical attention, etc. The slaves were being rented out in Grenada, Mississippi and they were being paid for in Confederate money, due to Confederate occupation in 1862. Initially, Houghton sued Bruce, after the Civil War, for money allegedly paid him for the slaves of Parrott he rented out. Subsequently, Bruce filed a countersuit. |

Contract dispute: balance due on 1864 sale of 28,050 lbs. of cotton at 50 cents per pound by Bridgeforth to Baugh. Baugh claimed he only contracted for 24,185 lbs. of cotton for which he overpaid plaintiff by $1273.75. Jury verdict against defendant and damages of $1863.86 awarded in Circuit Court. Supreme Ct. held record overwhelming supported the jury's verdict. |

Mathes is a tax collector. When the plaintiffs started their business, they agreed to pay a tax based on the largest amount of stock over the past year. They ended up paying $782--equaling about .60 cents for every $100 worth of stock. However, Mathes said they also had to pay a license tax equal to the same amount. Plaintiffs say the extra tax is illegal. |

John C. Berry of Arkansas bought a quantity of corn from the firm Palluli & Reese. With them present he paid a portion of the purchase money to Captain Lee of the steamer Cheek and a portion to each partner. Reese soon obtained a warrant against him but he was unable to comply because word of the warrant reached him as his steam boat was about to set sail and he had prior business obligations that would have been badly hurt if he had not left. He alleges he paid all the debt. |
