Case begun in Meigs County in 5/1865, but moved to McMinn County in 12/1865. Plaintiff originally James Cafer, but he died in 1866 & case continued by his wife. Case also originally included George W. Clemenson [also spelled Clemenston & Clementson] & John C. Sharp as codefendants of Smith & Peak. Suit for $50,000 for false imprisonment on 6/8/1861. Cafer was anti-secession & defendants were pro-secession. Defendants took Cafer prisoner when he was en route to vote against secession. |

Martin, as County tax assessor and collector, assessed $28 in taxes for a piece of land in Meigs County against Hutsell. When Hutsell did not pay it, Martin issued a ditress warrant to collect the amount. Hutsell claimed that the land was not his and petitioned the court to prevent taxation and action against him regarding the property tax. |

Plaintiff brought suit with a plea of trespass with force and arms to his damages of $500, and ejectment. The 110 acres of land in question had been granted (#3248) to Ruth's husband James Blevins in 1838. Defendant initially found guilty of ejectment, but this judgment was overturned on appeal. 1856 case on ejectment found between Crew and Blevins in same county. |

Martin's will stipulated that the plaintiffs should be freed from slavery and transported to the west coast of Africa to live. The plaintiffs are both ill and believe they will die from journey or the African climate. Plaintiffs are seeking an injunction to the decree. The case file notes that all of the slaves freed by Martin have died of illness except for the plaintiffs. Plaintiff's last names are not noted. |

Bridges owned 80 acres of land in Hiwassee District & claimed Guinn ejected them from it. As the court put it, Bridges had a "younger grant [to the land] founded upon the elder entry" & Guinn had the reverse, "the elder grant but the younger entry." The Bridges' claim was through Caroline's dad Dennis C. Murphy. Guinn's claim was through a man named Reynolds said to be the first settler of the land, & Guinn was in possession of the land when Murphy died. |

Allen owned 319-1/4 acres in Hiwassee District, 8th Section, southeast & northeast quarters, 3rd range, 3rd fractional township west (aka Lucas & Elder Mill tract), through which Goodfield Creek ran, on which tract he owned a valuable mill site. Dispute arose when McCorkle (he also had a mill) erected lg dam from one side of creek bank to the other, causing overflow on Allen's land. Jury ruled in McCorkle's favor. Lots of testimony regarding history of this land & mills & dams that have been built on it. |

Defendant was charged with first degree murder, tried and convicted and sentenced to serve thirty years in the State Penitentiary. Defendant was jointly indicted with Carl Hickman, Aldie Bunch who were alleged to have killed one Bill Bunch, 8 Oct. 1930, and to have secreted deceased's body in the Hiwassee River near where he was murdered. The body was recovered from the river, June 1931. |
