Sept 12, 1839, Tyler said to have committed the following misdeed: he devised a plan to obtain goods from Matthew Gaines without paying for them. Tyler forged a letter from one James Suttrell to shop owner Gaines requesting items delivered to Ed Tyler. Items include: two silk handkerchiefs, five yards calico, and other dry goods, total worth $5. Also charged with receiving goods under false pretenses. This is an appeal of Circuit Court verdict of guilty w/sentence of 3 years at TN State Penitentiary |

According to George, Noah was going to be indicted in Scott County for stealing a hog & wanted George to lie for him under oath & threatened to kill him if he didn't. George claimed shooting was in self- defense when Noah showed up at his house brandishing a pistol. Noah was also "living as man and wife" with his niece Bertha Crabtree (daughter of George's & Noah's brother Bill). |

Davis was Assistant Marshall prior to resigning. Bill Le Force and others had threatened him before the incident while he was Marshall. Davis argued he shot in self defense, & the argument sought to transmute the charge to manslaughter, and determine that the victim was in fact armed. |

Silas Weatherford testified that Lewis was at Mr. Wilson's grocery with others & James C. Hunter offered everyone a drink, but Lewis was already drunk. Hunter announced to the crowd that he would "cut a g_dd_mn_d man" & chased Silas outside where Hunter cut him. According to witnesses, Lewis did not interfere, but cheered him on. Lewis appealed because he did not actually assault anyone. |

Crabtree and Calvin Marcum are charged with murdering John Murphy by shooting him with a gun. Murphy and Crabtree were having a shooting contest for whiskey when the two began arguing. The initial shot went through Murphy's ear but did not kill him. It was several minutes before the second deadly shot occurred. Crabtree is arguing self-defense. In the witness testimony there are several references to Murphy holding a masonic lodge. |

There is a question about the legality of the search warrant used to search the plaintiff's car. A copy of the warrant is included in the case file. |

Murray had been sent to protect Morgan arrived as shooting erupted & he defended himself. Morgan was the mine foreman & Hendricks a weigh checker who was known for being dishonest at work. |
