E.M. Thurman was charged with murder in the first degree for the killing of Newton Cooley. Thurman had been having an illicit relationship with Cooley's daughter Hattie who was said to be about 15 years old. The shooting took place in the Cooley home. |

Incomplete case file; brief only. Additional parties: August Ricketts, Mrs. Jasper Patton, Esau Eldridge, Elijah Thurman, Emanuel Thurman, Henry Hawkins. Friends traveled from Soddy to Dayton for a dance. Eldridge did not go to the dance once in Dayton, but his friend Roark did & was seen flourishing a pistol. Roark found the others at a bar & attempted to attack Eldridge with a knife. Eldridge shot Roark twice, killing him. See additional documentation in box ET 812. |

Plaintiff in error was originally charged with burglary, larceny, and kidnapping. According to the state, plaintiff and several other men, including one named Steve Van Deusen robbed the Bank of Spring City then kidnapped A. H. Pittman who happened to be nearby. Pittman claims the men treated him well. Walker was arrested after exchanging gunfire with a police officer. |

In 1927 J. B. Wilson executed a note to purchase an automobile from Lawrence. Plaintiff soon tried to discount the note but failed. Lawrence then bamboozled H. A. Wilson into signing the note after Lawrence promised he would not be required to pay it. |

Tipton was convicted & fined $10 for failure to stop his train engine at a railway crossing. The suit argues that the crossing was made of tracks owned by two separate railway companies, that this somehow effected the ability of the train to be stopped at the junction. Incomplete case file; brief for the State only. Brown was accused of selling within four miles of school & for selling liquor without a license. John Banks went to Dayton to buy brandy from Brown in the train depot. Banks drank it all with a friend & went back to brown to buy more. They were caught by the sheriff who found they had procured the liquor from Brown. |

Pla. in error disturbed a prayer session at Smyrna Church by going through the church with a flashlight, looking for a lost pocket watch. After being unable to find it, Pla. in error left the church and began walking along the highway. Pla. in error then turned around to go back to the church to look for the watch again. On his way back, Pla. in error passed Rolly West and began cussing. When asked not to use such language in front of women, Pla. in error cut West and his wife with a knife. |

William accused of stealing bed, sheet & shirt from Wesley Casey & of stealing horse from Samuel B. Ferguson. Before trial, William fled to North Carolina. John Essex & Michael Essex pursued him, & John & Isaac Essex offered award for his apprehension. James C. Barton apprehended William & delivered him back to TN for trial but, while in jail, William & other criminals escaped to parts unknown. John, Michael, & Isaac Essex, along with James McFall, were securities for William's bond. |

Cause of action: carrying a pistol. Hughes charged with for publicly carrying a pistol not commonly carried and used in the U.S. army. Jury found Hughes guilty, fined him $10 and cost of suit, to give bond for his good behavior for 6 months, and remain in custody of sheriff until fine and costs were paid. |
