In a previous suit, Frederic Uhl successfully sued Peter Turney and was awarded a judgment of about $300. Greer was his bonded surety. Turney did not pay the judgment, and then died. Greer sued Turney's estate, of which Williams was the executor, in order to settle the debt. |

Hickman sold Maury a tract of land from North Carolina land grant #586. Several of these plots of land were sold to Hickman by James Hoggatt. The titles on the land were not perfect, and this suit was filed in order to legally sort out the chain of title filing proper ownership in the court. |

In 1812, Wright gave Sullivan a note for the for three hundred bushels salt in partial payment of a plot of land. Later, the two disagreed about the value of the salt, and what the remainder of the debt should be. Suit was filed to settle the transaction. |

Charles Morgan ran a plantation in Kentucky. Jeremiah Morgan, dec. executed a contract to sell half of a plot of land to Charles Morgan. Jerimiah then died leaving a wife, Mary, and heirs Armistead & Susannah. The issue with the land was not settled when Jeremiah died, so this suit was filed to settle the rightful land ownership. Martin Whitford sold David Anderews a cow, a bed, a certain parcel of corn then growing, for $132. However, Whitford had business in North Carolina & asked that the chattel be left in his family's care until he returned. Before taking possession of the land and Chattel, Andrews asked that the deal be broken. Whitford said he destroyed the bond, but then Sawyers sued Andrews to recover the debt on the bond. |

David Shelby sued James Robertson, Bennett & Robert Searcy, & Sarah Robertson, exe's of Elijah Robertson who died in 1790. Before his death, Elijah had promised to sell Shelby an enslaved male between the ages of 12-25. Following his death Elijah had not yet delivered the enslaved person, so a suit was brought to recover him. Shelby rec'd a judgment to recover the amount through real estate owned by Rbtson. The heirs protested. |

Edward Sanders hired an enslaved man, Abraham, from John Camp, paying with a note for $100. Shortly after Abraham became sick and was not able to work. Abraham went to the house of Miss Hope, where his wife lived. Sanders sued to recover the value of his note. |

Tatum was the surviving partner of the mercantile company Tatum & (Henry) Wiggins. The partners had purchased a large shipment of goods from Evans & David Allison, in Philadelphia to open a store in Washington, KY. Suit was filed to settle the debt owed to Evans, and to finally dissolve the partnership in accordance to their articles of formation. See additional documents in MT 1 & MT 75. |

In 1805 William Stephenson purchased land in Smith & Sumner counties from the Turpin brothers. Part of his payment was a horse, which soon died. Stephenson died in 1808 in Sumner County leaving widow Esther and daughter Irene. Esther married to John Irwin Dr. Wilson Yandle was admr. of the estate. Yandle & the widow sold the land, & Yandle bought most of it cheaply. Conflicting claims for the land were held by King Carr, John Carr & James Oglesby. Irene sued Yandle protesting the land was her inheritance. |

In 1797, Richard Cook of Granville County, North Carolina conveyed land to William Gwin of Sumner County, TN. The two made multiple agreements concerning multiple parcels of land over the years. John Gwin was William's heir & sued to settle the land matter so that his bequest might be finalized, and the estate settled. |

The Sheriff of Williamson county held a sale of real estate in 1808. The defendants purchased land as a group, each agreeing that the purchase would be for the benefit of each. They also agreed that whatever portion of land was not redeemed by the original owner in twelve months should become the property of the group. |

Washington Hannum lived on a 1,500 acre plot of land which he sold to Mulhearn. There was a dispute concerning the boundaries and value of the land and this suit was filed to settle the dispute. |

Jacob Philips entered a contract with John Burnley that would convey Burnley a lot of land. After making several payments, Philips told Burnley that he could not sell the land, until a grant could be procured from the State of Tennessee. In the mean time, John Haynes offered to buy the land from Philips, paying back Burnley his payment. Suit sought to settle rightful ownership to the land. |

In 1800, Overton obtained a judgment against the heirs of David Allison of $920.14. In his lifetime Allison purchased many plots of land from many people including Landon Carter & Andrew Jackson, but failed to obtain the deeds or register the conveyances. Overton sued: Jane, John, William, & Peggy Allison, and Andrew Jackson to recover the judgment, even if it were to be paid in land. |

Moore sued merchant partners Deadrick & Tatum for $5,773 to recover a debt, then Deadrick & Tatum obtained a judgement against Moore for $3,800. Moore then accused the partners of conspiring to cheat & defraud him from his debt by their counter suit. |

During a Sheriff's sale Harris purchased property that had formerly belonged to Robert King. Following the sale, Gale and Harris entered a partnership of ownership of the property legalized with a written contract. Gale went to New Orleans, & Harris sold part of the land without his knowledge. |

Cahoon, as agent for Jedidiah T. Turner, who had obtained a US patent for a threshing machine, made a contract with Drake, William Christy, & Charles Fishbach to trade land for rights to the patent. The land and patent rights were exchanged, then Turner discovered that he was defrauded by the trade. |

Winchester owed a debt to Jackson & Evans, & went to Philadelphia to pay it in full. After this, he traded US militia claims for more merchandise. The claims were examined by David Allison, who acted as Jackson & Evans' middle man, but who was later found questionable in his dealings. Other plaintiffs: Matthew's widow, Rebecca, and their children Jeptha, Cintha, Narcissa, Calvin, Polly, and James. Other defendants: Jabez Jones, John Cunningham, Sr., and John D. Cunningham. David Rankin is also involved. Some pages are fragile, so ribbon binding was left intact. |

In 1787 Joel Lewis purchased acreage land from Mr. Gordon of Georgia. Wm. T. Lewis then claimed ownership to some of this land, being given a grant by the state of NC then conveyed it to Stokely Donelson, who agreed to convey other land to Joel Lewis. The conveyance was not made before Stokely died. The suit was filed to finalize land ownership. |

In 1806, Lawrence Smith owned land in Williamson County on Murphy's Fork of the West Harpeth River. When he took possession, he cleared 20 acres, and purchased a house on the land built by Robert Brown. James Black then claimed that he was the true owner of the house and land, and it had been granted to him by John Armstrong. Suit sought to settle true ownership of the property. |

Mary married John Houston in 1829, after allegedly becoming pregnant with his child twice. John died in 1839. He owned slaves: Daniel, Sandy, Leah, Elsey, Ned, Elba, Catherin, Eleanor, Amanda. Mary filed for alimony, but he claimed she had a relationship with John McCamy whom she tried to kill by hitting in the head with a rock. Mary "Polly" Rose Houston sued Wm's son John to be recognized as an heir to the estate. |

Armstreat Stubblefield owned 640 acres of land on Norris Creek off the Elk River that he was supposedly authorized to sell. He contracted to sell a portion to Oliver Hayes, of whom paid almost the full amount due. However, once the amount was paid in full Stubblefield neglected to discharge the debt. Cornelius Drake entered a land grant to the surveyor general for land granted him for military service. After registration, Drake failed to pay taxes on the land. Sappington purchased 150 acres of this land. Cornelius died, leaving the remainder of the land to John M. Drake. White lived on the property, & claimed Cornelius sold him the land before he died. Sappington sued to get him to give up the claim and move off the land. |

Dr. Mark Brown Sappington died, leaving a large estate including enslaved people in Nashville. His second wife, Rebecca Boyce sued to retain the dower to the estate. Near the same time, Mark's brother Francis died also leaving an estate. Documents include an extensive probate inventory & sale sheet, detailing the belongings of the family (including detailed kitchen furniture) as well as detailing the community invested in the estate through the purchase of Mark's things. |
