In 1867 Helton was appointed Clerk of Chancery Court of Wayne County. During his tenure he executed several bonds for $10,000 each with defendants M. J. Sims, Joseph G. Berry, and E. V. Tunnard, R. P. Cypert, C. M. Thompson, W. R. Porter & C. C. Stribling as securities. However, he failed to turn over all of the money he collected. He and his securities were sued to recover the money owed to the County.
