Notes / Description:

Additional defendants: Elijah H. Miller and Jenny, a colored woman and former slave. When George Squibb died, he wrote in his will that Jenny would be freed so long as she served his widow through her natural life and that $500 would be issued to Jenny to meet any expense on her way to free country. However, Jenny ran away in 1863 claiming she was a free woman. Because Jenny was a free person with rights of any other citizen, Lynch charged there was no expense to meet and the $500 not necessary.
