Notes / Description:

Before he died, Samuel owed Patterson $200 for work Patterson had done for him on his farm, driving his wagon & other business, for which Samuel never paid him. Elizabeth argued that Patterson was owed nothing since he was a negro, born a slave, and at time this suit began, was not a free man, never having appropriately obtained emancipation in the manner required by law. Patterson says he WAS free before suit was filed, having been emancipated by the will of his master James Patterson.
