L. A. Williams hired Ridge in 1929 to care for and run the Alleghany Springs Hotel until it opened on July 4, 1930. He was to receive $7.50 per month year round, and for three months, beginning on July 4, 1930, he was to receive $12.00 per day and board for himself and family. Ridge moved to the Springs, about 16 miles from his home, and prepared the hotel for its open. L. A. Williams died, and his administrator, L. E. Williams, decided to drop the venture. Ridge sued for the bulk of his pay.
