Plaintiffs claimed that in 1883, they executed several promissory notes to A. J. Pratt, an unfortunate invalid and cripple who wished to start a business to manufacture broom handles. This would enable Pratt to support himself and his ageing father, who was also a cripple. He used the money as collateral to purchase machinery for the [failed] venture.
