Other plaintiffs: D. M. Stewart; M. R. Thurman. Whiteside was Justice of the Peace for 2nd Ward in Chattanooga. Gen. Assembly passed law in 1875 giving Chattanooga 2 JPs per ward. Plaintiffs said law was unconstitutional b/c it contained a population provision so law only applied to Chattanooga. Also argued that even if law was constitutional, it was no longer valid b/c Chattanooga's population now exceeded provision. & that, therefore, Whiteside's election was invalid. 7 other similar cases in box.
