Indicted for Murder in the 1st, the jury returned a conviction of Involuntary Manslaughter. Martin was accused of killing "Artie or A. H. Gilchrist". Martin was a struggling farmer, and became indebted to Gilchrist, owner and operator of a cotton gin. Gilchrist agreed to settle the debt by a sale of Martin's 18 acres of land. Martin confronted Gilchrist about the picking of a crop, and during the argument shot him. In 2 folders.
