Alleged bigamy: On June 20, 1842, Rice married Barthena Nunn, spinster, & then while still married to Nunn, on October 12, 1845, he married Nancy Parker. Rice was poor & could not afford an attorney, so counsel was appointed for him. He was convicted & sentenced to 2 years of hard labor in the state penitentiary.
