Vance admitted to setting fire & burning the barn of John N. Harris, which barn contained corn, oats, hay & stock. Vance, who was living with & working for Harris at the time, claimed that Nancy Oats persuaded him to burn the barn for her. According to Vance, Oats wanted revenge on Harris for once charging her with burning his rails. After he burned the barn, Vance went to stay that night with his brother Solomon Vance at the home of Bill Simpson. Vance convicted & sentenced to 10 years.
