Grand jury indicted the Paynes for assaulting William J. H. Griffin, alleging they did "beat, wound, and ill-treat" Griffith. Jury found them guilty. Griffin testified that 3-4 weeks earlier, Constable M.A. Walker came to his fields w/Mr. Wilson; they had replevy warrant for 1 of Griffin's cows, said warrant sued out by Wiley Payne, who was waiting w/Barbara outside the field 250 yards away. Griffith & Wiley had heated conversation & altercation resulted, which included Barbara (she used club).
