Willie Crook, an African American man, was charged with murdering Mathew Wiggins by shooting him with a pistol in July 1926. Crook argued that he did shoot Wiggins, but that it was in self-defense. There is a note in this file from the Public Health Officer stating that Crook had an advanced case of pulmonary tuberculosis during the course of his imprisonment.
